Business Etiquette and Service Excellence Portfolio

Topic 1: Building a Professional Presence

This is the first topic of Business Etiquette and Service Excellence module. I personally think this topic is an important and basic topic to start off this module as after all, our personal image is the first impression we make. Be it in the professional business or working world but also our everyday lives. I have learnt the basic proper and professional way of formal dressing from the tip of the hair to the end of my toes. This topic was an exciting topic for myself as personally I love to dress to impress. Thus, understanding this topic was not a problem for me. For myself, I believe that having an interest in a topic is all that I need to understand and concentrate also to be committed to learn more about it. The depth of this topic was quite acceptable. It was not too draggy or lengthy although it seems to be a lot to cover up. This was quite a surprise to me as I thought it was a very long topic as it covers how to groom ourselves from top to bottom. Other than dressing up, this topic has also taught me how to appear to people in the real world. Be it in my own point of view or the other party view.

The lectures on this topic was rather precise and maybe there could be more creativity to be applied to the way of presentation of the topic would be good. This is because some of the students including me may have the thoughts that some points are rather commonsensical and when it is explained more and more, it becomes rather dull. The workshops were god complement after the lectures. It enhance more of my understanding. One good thing about the workshops throughout the journey of business etiquette is hat my tutor, Ms Mariah put in and slots bits and pieces of her real life experience relevant to the topic. Not only for professional presence 1 and 2 but also other topics. This Is what I like and adore as I can take this experience to understand more in depth and also apply it in my future working career. Other than that there is a particular workshops about the Shiseido make up which is more of the skin knowledge was also very applicable. Knowing more about our own skin makes us learn how to take care of them and be more confident in public and meeting new people. Again for instance new business clients or a simple job interview.

This topic helped me in dressing properly throughout the semester in my tertiary education. Besides being in formal in presentations, the knowledge that I have learnt was applied during my Student Internship Programme (SIP) interviews. Before, presentations were only about wearing a shirt, pants and tie. Not even a blazer was put on. Now, I put more effort to look good, to make the impression, blazers on, nice ironed shirts and pant and a shine waxed leather shoes. Other than knowing about my own grooming, the knowledge of lady’s grooming also helped me in observing my fellow classmates and friends. l I will be the one reminding and telling them if they are not in any appropriate attire. Besides, I also inform them do they look nice in this or that, which is completely relevant to this topic. Whats the use of learning something but we do not apply it in our everyday life. So, that was something I did for my friends. A favour for me and them.

The relevancy of this topic is so great on me. Like what I have mentioned, it not only affects me now, but also the future. Furthermore, I am in the hospitality industry which is a direct front line job. So, I really think this topic would place me in the map, letting people remember me just by one look, definitely in a well and good manner.

Topic 2: Corporate Politics

This topic is all about the real world. Real working industry. Where I am going to be in , in future. It is quite threatening for me as in how am I going to handle all this sort of things especially being the newest employee in the organization. The depth of the topic was good as in I know at least something about it. I was totally in a 50 percent knowledge ready about corporate politics. After going through the lecture and workshop, I was more equipped with the knowledge of corporate politics. I knew the hierarchy to “lick boots” and know how to be neutral next time. This is so relevant to me especially when I enter the working world. Some of us may think that this topic is like common. But to me this is something important in order to survive in a particular company or organization. The fact that we have to be somebody else and being honest is not something everybody recognizes. I developed the skills of being myself and at the same time putting others in my own shoes.

True enough that we need to obey our own rules but I think in a company there are other people who are our colleagues and rivals in disguise. So to stand up and earn the most, knowing the background of corporate politics is so important. Other than about knowing the VIPs and the how to act infront of people, I have learnt about the issues on sexual harassment. Before, I only I know the surface about this topic. Now, I know the different types of harassments and it is also applicable for males. Despite knowing the theory wise, I also know the measures to it.

Currently, as a student and a part timer retail associate, I could see politics amongst my friends and in my working place. Although its not those formal politics but it is about the similar things that I have learnt here. For instant, I know how to be neutral if there are gossips among the people and just do not contribute or participate. I can sense that this is a hard thing and needs practice in order not to participate. Knowing the corporate politics is so important and relevant to my career as there will be a huge hierarchy in an organization. I believe, to survive, we must know the background of everyone also.

Topic 3: International Business

This topic is one of my favourite as I would love to work overseas. Thus, this topic is so called have equipped me a little bit in my “must-know” things. There is a whole lot of information that I have gathered throughout the learning of this topic. From individually to family view wise. I think the information was very wise, precise, and in depth. I got to learn the basic survival skills in other countries. Besides that, the group project regarding this topic have helped me a lot in understanding the culture of other countries. Realizing the tough side of surviving in others land, I became more stronger and wanting to go overseas. Being in Singapore only would be great but at the same time I personally think we should go global and experience working in others land. This would make us more independent and more matured as we are able to support on our own. Nevertheless, there would be times when we will just go hay wire when we are alone too. I applied the skills I have learn not currently but maybe in future. Although I am not going for and overseas internship programmes, I believe that the knowledge I have learnt would make me prepared for future adventures.
The topic was an interesting one as we get to know the whole lot of other countries. However, it could be more interesting if there were other ways to make us learn like for example to the museum or some overseas trip. Talking about working internationally, I would love to be posted to other countries like China, Europe and more if I have the chance by my company. As I see myself not into a just in office types, I would also like to travel. One of my ambition in the list is to be a flight attendant. Knowing more about the importance of other countries’ culture would readily equip me.

Overall, I believe that Business Etiquette and Service Excellence module is an exciting and sort of fun module. I have leant a lot of the business, the exteriors and the behind the scenes of being a working adult. This would equip me in stepping into the working world in future. At the same time changed me into a better person. Knowing myself more, how to make the first impression and how to survive amongst the politics and issues. This module do made an impact on me.
